Germany have coasted through the group stage, not tiring themselves too much, and they looked as if they were in second gear. In the first knockout round they played just a bit harder, entering the third gear, and Slovakia were utterly powerless and lost the match cleanly 3-0. Germany have so much more in store but are now facing a side that is so difficult to play against. However, if anyone can beat Italy it’s the Germans. Germany have a problem with scoring although they’re a team that’s looking very good in offense due to their clever passing game. But, of course, Germans never dribble, which limits their options, and they also don’t have a proper forward. Germany are therefore not without weaknesses, and just like the Italians, they’re finding it difficult to score but eventually manage to find a way through.
Italy are the most cunning side on the tournament. It’s virtually impossible to score against their Juventus three-man defence organized by Gianluigi Buffon – the Irish did it in a rubber match for Italy – and Italy eventually find a way to score from a counter attack as all of these guys can play football. While Italy don’t have a single top player in midfield or attack, Antonio Conte has slowed the game down just enough so even these guys can control the ball just well enough to always be in a fluent attacking state. This playing style was invented by the Italians, and this generation is making it work perhaps better than any other. But we’ll have to wait and see can they defeat the world champions after defeating the european champions Spain in the previous round 2-0.
